Remote Examinations
A Remote Examination from the Student Perspective
From the student's point of view, this is what happens during a timed, remote examination:- The instructor administers the examination as an Assigned Assessment on Crowdmark. The assessment is available shortly before the scheduled time of the examination, and has a deadline corresponding to the student’s allotted time, including any extra-time accommodation, and 20-30 minutes for uploading images.
- Students receive an email invitation from Crowdmark to access the examination. For example, “There is a new assignment waiting for you on Crowdmark: Final Examination, MATH 220-1, Spring 2020.”
- Students access the examination by following the link in the Crowdmark invitation.
- Students write responses to the examination questions on their own paper and save images of their responses as PDF, PNG, or JPG files.
- Students upload their image files by dragging them to the upload areas under the questions.
- Students click the “Submit for evaluation” button when they have finished uploading.

Accessing or Importing a Canvas Course Site on Crowdmark
Before creating a Crowdmark Assigned Assessment for your course, you must access or import your Canvas course site on Crowdmark.
- Visit Crowdmark for Northwestern.
- Click the “Sign in with Canvas” button.
- Sign in using your Northwestern credentials.
- Authorize Crowdmark to access your Canvas account.
- The “My Courses” page appears. If you do not see your course listed, then click the “Import Course” button on the top right, select your course from the dropdown menu, and Crowdmark will generate a list of your Canvas courses. This may take some time.
- Select your course. Do not check “This course has sections." Click the “Import Course” button.
- Click the “Enroll Students from Canvas” button.
Create an Examination as a Crowdmark Assigned Assessment
You may need to create three separate assessments:
- one for students with no extra-time accommodations,
- one for students with 1.5x extra-time accommodations, and
- one for students with 2.0x extra-time accommodations.
For each assessment:
- From the “My Courses” page, select the relevant course.
- Click the “Create Assessment” button at the top right of page.
- Name the assessment, enroll students from your course, and click “Save.”
- Choose “Assigned Assessment” as the assessment type.
- Enter the due date for your assessment. The date should be the scheduled date of your examination. Set the time to reflect the length of the examination, any extra-time accommodation, and 20-30 minutes for students to upload their work. For example, a 50-minute examination beginning at 10:00 a.m. for a student with a 1.5x extra time accommodation and 20 minutes to upload, would be due at 11:35 a.m.
- Add questions to the examination. The text box supports LaTeX source code. Alternatively, you can upload a file (e.g. a page of your examination containing only the relevant question).
- A success message appears, as well as a “Map Canvas Data” message. Scroll down to the data category containing the students NetID and designate this category as “Student ID #”.
- Click the “Save” button.
Best Practices

Be unusually careful about typesetting and proofreading examinations.

Require that students “test drive” a Crowdmark Assigned Assessment before the actual examination so that they can practice scanning and uploading images of their work.

Require students to copy an academic integrity statement as the first question of the examination. The Office of the Provost is crafting a model statement. Require that students sign their academic integrity statement if and only if your course does not have an undergraduate teaching assistant.

Be available via Zoom throughout the examination for students to ask questions.
