2024 BOAS DAY

On Oct 16th at 4pm in Lunt 105 we will celebrate the mathematics of our new postdocs: Boas AP, RTG fellows, and postdoctoral lecturers.  Our postdocs will present their mathematical interests in talks of 4 minutes each, always aimed at our first year graduate students. The titles of the talks are here:

BEN WEINKOVE NAMED MADAN LAL PURI PROFESSOR OF MATHEMATICS

NU Math faculty member, Ben Weinkove, is now named the inaugural Madan Lal Puri Professor of Mathematics. This new endowed chair is named after Madan Lal Puri, Professor Emeritus at Indiana University, a prolific researcher whose work spanned many areas of statistics.  This appointment acknowledges Ben’s incredible accomplishments in research, teaching and service. 

 

YUCHEN LIU SELECTED AS AT&T RESEARCH FELLOW

NU Math faculty member, Prof. Yuchen Liu, is selected as an AT&T Research Fellow by Northwestern's Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences. This appointment, which lasts from Sept 2024--Aug 2026, recognizes the excellence of Yuchen's many accomplishments as a scholar, teacher, and citizen of the University and aims to support his current research projects. 

NEW TENURE-LINE FACULTY JOIN NU MATH DEPT

Prof. Rachel Greenfeld and Prof. Allen Yuan are the new tenure-line faculty members at Northwestern University's Mathematics Department. 

 

NORTHWESTERN MATH FACULTY PROMOTED

Northwestern faculty members, Yuchen Liu and Maria Nastasescu, have been promoted. Liu was  promoted to Associate Professor and Maria Nastasescu has been promoted to Associate Professor of Instruction.

KRA INDUCTED AS MEMBER OF THE CHILEAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES

NU Math faculty member, Prof. Bryna Kra, was inducted as a Foreign Corresponding Member of the Chilean Academy of Sciences on May 30. At the induction ceremony, Kra gave a general audience address titled, “Dynamics of the Integers”.    

2024 NEMMERS PRIZE IN MATHEMATICS ANNOUNCED

Luigi Ambrosio, has won the 2024 Nemmers Prize in Mathematics. He receives the prize for his “deep and numerous contributions to calculus of variations and geometric measure theory, and broad and far-reaching influence on these fields.” Ambrosio is Professor of Mathematics, and currently serving as Director, of the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa. The Nemmers Prize Selection Committee members were Sir Martin Hairer (Lausanne/Imperial), Aaron Naber (Northwestern) and Joseph Silverman (Brown). Luigi Ambrosio has agreed to visit Northwestern in 2025 to receive his prize and take part in some mathematical activities.  Dates and details are to be determined.  

NABER ELECTED TO NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES

NU Mathematics faculty member,  Prof. Aaron Naber, has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences in recognition of distinguished and continuing achievements in original research. A new Quanta Magazine article on Aaron Naber's work, giving a counterexample to the Milnor Conjecture, has now been published.

GETZLER RECEIVES VISITING PROFESSORSHIP

NU Math Prof. Ezra Getzler has been selected by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences to receive a Visiting Professorship from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation.  

 

NU MATH CAUSEWAY STUDENT RECEIVES NSF FELLOWSHIP

Causeway student, Marie-Rose Tonguino, has received a highly competitive NSF Graduate Research Fellowship, which she will use for an Economics PhD at Yale University.

 

BEN ANTIEAU NAMED A 2024 SIMONS FELLOW

NU Mathematics faculty member, Ben Antieau, was named a 2024 Simons Fellow. The Simons Fellows programextends academic leaves for outstanding mathematicians from one term to a full year, enabling recipients to focus solely on research for the long periods often necessary for significant advances.

FORMER NU GRADUATE STUDENT, RUOYU WANG, WINS 2023 ICCM GRADUATE THESIS AWARD

ANANTH SHANKAR NAMED 2024 SLOAN RESEARCH FELLOW

Ananth Shankar has been named a 2024 Sloan Research Fellow by the Alfred P Sloan Foundation. He was also recently awarded a prestigious CAREER grant from the National Science Foundation.  

IN MEMORIAM: JUDITH SALLY (1937-2024)

Professor Emerita Judith Sally passed away on January 28, 2024. Judith Sally joined the faculty of the NU Mathematics Department in 1972 and remained until her retirement 30 years later.  Read more about Prof. Sally, her accomplishments in Mathematics, and work within the NU Math Dept.

KATY LOYD AWARDED NSF POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP

MATH DIGITAL MATERIALS PROJECT PROVIDES FREE COURSE MATERIALS

Director of Calculus, Prof. Aaron Greicius, coordinated the Math Digital Materials Project, which is providing $87,296 in funding through the Office of the Provost for access codes to course textbooks and online homework systems for students in eligible courses. The funding will last the entire 2023-2024 academic year.

ANANTH SHANKAR AWARDED NSF CAREER GRANT

Ananth Shankar has been awarded a prestigious CAREER grant from the National Science Foundation.  The grant, “Algebraicity and Integral Models of Shimura Varieties”, will provide almost $500K to support Ananth’s research and educational activities in the department.
