"Based on his work in EAGL, Sam won a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship in 2013. He completed his undergraduate studies in just three years and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a BS in Pure Mathematics and a minor in Philosophy. Sam went on to Northwestern University, earned a Master’s degree in mathematics in 2015, and is now a lead data analyst in Chicago."  Click here for to read the entire article

Northwestern University's Mathematics Prof. John Alongi and Prof. Aaron Peterson Named to the 2018-19 ASG Faculty Honor Roll.

Prof. John M. Alongi received his PhD in Mathematics from Northwestern University, and is currently the Director of Mathematical Experience for Northwestern Undergraduates (MENU), as well as a Professor of Instruction in the Department of Mathematics. According to students, Prof. Alongi is "awesome" and "dedicated to his students' learning." He was nominated for his work in Mathematics 285. We are honored to present this distinction to Dr. Alongi.

Prof. Aaron Peterson received his PhD in Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics. According to a student, Dr. Peterson "is not only very interested in the subject, but is also very concerned that students learn the material in a way that is demonstrated by his approachability, his enthusiasm, and his overall teaching method". He was nominated for his work in Mathematics 224: Integral Calculus of One-Variable Functions and Mathematics 325: Complex Analysis. We are honored to present this distinction to Dr. Peterson.

Valentino Tosatti Named as a Fellow of the American Mathematics Society

Northwestern University Mathematics Professor Valentino Tosatti has been named as a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society. The Fellows of the American Mathematical Society program recognizes members who have made outstanding contributions to the creation, exposition, advancement, communication, and utilization of mathematics.

Mathematics Department Faculty Promotions

The department is pleased to announce the following promotions and to congratulate these deserving colleagues: Santiago Canez has been promoted to Associate Professor of Instruction. John Francis has been promoted to Associate Professor of Mathematics, Eugene Kushnirksy has been promoted to Associate Professor of Instruction, and Emmy Murphy has been promoted to Associate Professor of Mathematics.

Faculty members Tuca Auffinger and Gang Lui were individually awarded a Gold Prize for their papers by the International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians.

Tuca Auffinger and his coauthor Wei-Ku Chen authored a paper on "The Parisi measure has a unique minimizer" in Communications in Mathematical Physics. Gang Liu authored a paper on "Gromov-Hausdorff limits of Kaehler manifolds and the finite generation conjecture" in the Annals of Math.

Northwestern mathematician wins award at 'Oscars of Science'

Northwestern University mathematician Aaron Naber was among several awardees of the 2018 Breakthrough Prize, the so-called “Oscars of Science,” which celebrates top achievements in physics, life sciences and mathematics and is sponsored by Silicon Valley elites including Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg and Google’s Sergey Brin.

Prof. Andrei Suslin Passed Away on July 10, 2018 in St. Petersburg, Russia

Andrei’s major work was in the area where algebraic geometry, algebraic groups, and algebraic K-theory overlap; in particular, he is responsible for many major results that established algebraic K-theory as an important field.

2018 Frederic Esser Nemmers Mathematics Prize Recipient​

The 2018 Nemmers Prize in Mathematics has been awarded to Assaf Naor of Princeton University for his profound work on the geometry of metric spaces, which has led to breakthroughs in the theory of algorithms. The selection committee was Jared Wunsch of Northwestern University, Akshay Venkatesh from Stanford, and Mikhail Lyubich from Stony Brook.

Mathematics Faculty Win 2018 Linzer Grant

For the second year in a row, faculty of the Mathematics Department have been awarded a Daniel I. Linzer grant to promote equity and inclusion. This year the award went to Professors Zaslow, Alongi, Cañez, Kra, and Onnie Rogers, from Psychology, for the Causeway Postbaccalaureate Program. Last year the award went to Professors Kra, DeMarco, Getzler, and Goerss for the Graduate Research Opportunities for Women (GROW) workshops.
