Math Society (NUMS)

The Math Society is a group of students who share an interest in Mathematics, whether or not they are majoring or minoring in Mathematics. The Society sponsors academic and social events throughout the year. It has organized panels on summer research opportunities in mathematics and on graduate study and career possibilities in mathematics and related fields. Faculty members from Northwestern and elsewhere have talked about recreational mathematics and about their own research; films with mathematical themes or about mathematics have also been presented. Refreshments are served at most Society events.

Prior to registration in the Spring, the Society hosts its "oral CTECs" in which students talk about their experiences in various courses and with various teachers.

Information on Math Society events is distributed through its listserv. To subscribe, send an email message to listproc@listserv.it.northwestern.edu, replacing the words "your name" that appear in the body of the message with your actual name. (If that doesn't work, send your own email message with the text "subscribe MATHSOCIETY your name"; no subject is necessary).

Pi Mu Epsilon

Northwestern also has a chapter (Beta of Illinois) of Pi Mu Epsilon, the national Math Honor Society, which was founded in 1914 to promote scholarly activity in mathematics among students in academic institutions.

A student seeking election to membership in Pi Mu Epsilon should
