In this introductory talk, after recalling the main notions on the geometry of the Deligne-Mumford moduli space of stabe curves, we will review Kontsevich and Manin's definition of Cohomological Field Theories as special systems of cohomology classes on the aforementioned moduli space. We will consider several examples and, time permitting, we will state the Witten-Kontsevich theorem.
