I will introduce the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism, review the recent work of Felder and Kazhdan, and show that supergravity (in one spacetime dimension!) violates their axioms. This leads to a proposed solution which may be relevant to understanding the pure spinor formalism for the covariant superstring.
