Abstract:
Matroids are combinatorial objects that aim to capture the notion of independence in mathematics. They show up in many different contexts that include, but are not limited to, optimisation, topology, commutative algebra and algebraic geometry. The goal of the talk is to give a friendly introduction to matroid theory from a combinatorial point of view and give an idea of why they show up naturally in many diverse situations like the study of hyperplane arrangements, commutative algebra and, if time permits, tropical geometry.Date: Friday, October 02, 2015
