Abstract:

I will describe the construction of an infinite set of smooth, projective threefolds that have equivalent derived categories but are not isomorphic, contrary to a conjecture of Kawamata. The example is based on observations about the dynamics of rational maps, and the varieties all arise as blow-ups of CP3 at various configurations of 8 points. As time permits, I will discuss how related constructions give rise to some other counterexamples in birational geometry.
