Cobordism is a fundamental equivalence relation on the class of n-dimensional compact manifolds. Up to this equivalence relation,n-dimensional smooth compact manifolds form a group under disjoint unions. This group turns out to be isomorphic to the nth homotopy group of the Thom space of a certain bundle. The latter group is computable and gives an answer to the classification of n dimensional smooth compact manifolds up to cobordism.Date: Friday, February 27, 2015This talk will start from the definition of cobordism and Thom spaces and give the construction of the isomorphism between cobordism groups and homotopy groups of Thom spaces.
