Abstract:

The classical Manin-Mumford conjecture is a result in arithmetic geometry that roughly states the following: a subvariety of an abelian variety can contain a lot of torsion points only for a specific geometric reason: it contains an abelian subvariety. We'll discuss some accessible examples of this sort of phenomenon and some important results this relates to!
