Abstract:

Seminar talk: Why study modular representation theory? Statement of Broué's abelian defect group conjecture for symmetric groups. The picture of Lascoux-Leclerc-Thibon relating representations of the symmetric group with the basic representation of an affine Lie algebra. The definition of a categorical sl_n action, and the solution of Broué's conjecture for the symmetric group by Chuang and Rouquier. If time permits: relations to categorified link homology and the problem of taking tensor products.
