Abstract:

I will describe joint work with Richard Taylor showing that the potential automorphy theorems of Barnet-Lamb, Gee, Geraghty, and Taylor continue to hold with purity hypotheses in place of the usual irreducibility hypotheses. A similar argument yields new results toward `cuspidality implies irreducibility.' I will illustrate the potential automorphy theorem by exhibiting many families of regular motives whose L-functions can then be shown to admit meromorphic continuations. Understanding these examples and contextualizing the hypotheses in the main theorem will be the focus of the talk; in particular, no familiarity with the (formidable) potential automorphy technology will be required.
