Abstract:

The space of homomorphisms from a Fuchsian group to a simple group has been studied from several points of view, by several different communities of mathematicians, including mathematical physicists, algebraic geometers, and finite groups theorists. I will discuss some joint work with Alex Lubotzky and Claude Marion, in which we use geometric methods to understand finite simple quotients of Fuchsian groups.
