Abstract:

In this talk we will introduce the Yang-Mills functional, motivated by some simple observations in electromagnetism. We will state the Donaldson-Uhlenbeck-Yau theorem, and give some examples of bundles which admit, or do not admit, Hermitian-Yang-Mills connections. Time permitting, we will also discuss some applications of Yang-Mills theory to moduli of vector bundles.
