Abstract:

In this talk, I will describe the geometry of the Hilbert scheme of points on surfaces. Hilbert schemes in general are poorly understood and can be badly behaved. Hilbert schemes of points on surfaces, on the other hand, give some of the most beautiful examples in algebraic geometry. Their study is closely linked to representation theory, combinatorics and mathematical physics. I will explain the main features of the geometry of the Hilbert scheme of points in the plane, concentrating on running the minimal model program. If time permits, I will give a brief introduction to Bridgeland stability conditions.
