Title: Pretalk: Volume of convex polytopes and number of solutions of a system of algebraic equations
Speaker: Kiumars Kaveh
Speaker Info: Pittsburgh
Brief Description:
Special Note:
Abstract:

I will discuss the Bernstein-Kushnirenko theorem on the number of solutions of a system of Laurent polynomials in terms of volumes of their Newton polytopes. I will explain the beautiful connection this establishes between convex geometry and algebraic geometry. If time permits I will describe our recent result which generalizes this to convex bodies and systems of algebraic equations on arbitrary varieties. Most of the talk should be understandable with just undergraduate background in algebra and geometry.
