I will give a survey of recent development in the log minimal model program for the moduli space of curves. In this Hassett-Keel program, various moduli spaces of curves manifest themsevles as log canonical models of the moduli of stable curves. These moduli spaces can be constructed with GIT or without it as algebraic stacks (that possess a good moduli space). I'll also explain several methods for making predictions about what kind of singular curves would appear in these moduli spaces.
