Abstract:

I will give an introduction to the theory of extremal metrics in the sense of Calabi, focusing on how extremal metrics can be interpreted in terms of an infinite dimensional moment map. I will try to explain and motivate the Yau-Tian-Donaldson conjecture, which relates the existence of an extremal metric to a purely algebro-geometric notion called K-stability.
