We review a recent conjecture of Dijkgraaf and Vafa claiming that the topological sector of N=1 supersymmetric gauge theory is calculated exactly in the planar limit of a matrix model. We show in an example that non-planar diagrams calculate gravitational corrections to the gauge theory and can be matched with a space-time instanton calculation in supergravity. The latter contributions can also be obtained in the limit of the topological string on a local Calabi-Yau manifold.
