Abstract:
Mahowald's root invariant gives a homotopy theoretic replacement for the Greek letter elements in the stable homotopy groups of spheres. The prime 3 is the largest prime that displays anamolous v2-periodic behaviour. I'll describe which elements beta_i in the Adams-Novikov E_2 term are permanent cycles at the prime 3, and will identify some of them as root invariants of the alpha_i. I'll also discuss which elements deserve to be called the 'homotopy beta_i' when the corresponding algebraic beta_i fail to be permanent cycles.Date: Monday, February 24, 2003
