Abstract:
I will discuss the clasical notions of rational and unirational varieties and contrast them to a class of varieties introduced more recently by Kollar, Miyaoka, and Mori -- the class of rationally connected varieties. This class captures much of the flavor of rationality but is far better behaved in higher dimensions. In particular, I will discuss the fact that rational connectivity is well behaved in fibrations and how this is relevant to the problem of classification of algebraic varieties in higher dimensions. This is joint work with Joe Harris and Jason Starr.Date: Wednesday, January 16, 2002
